Subjective Sleep Quality (PSQI)

In studies using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the intervention group (using an eye mask/earplugs) had an average PSQI score about 5 points lower than the control group. (Lower PSQI is better.)

Subjective Sleep Quality (RCSQ)

For the Richards–Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (where higher scores indicate better sleep), studies report an average improvement of about 11.46 points for the intervention group.

Correlation Between Slow-Wave Sleep (SWS) and Learning Performance

Studies found a positive correlation (r ≈ 0.51) between minutes spent in slow-wave sleep (SWS) and learning performance improvements when using an eye mask.

Objective Sleep Parameter Improvements (PSG Data)

Here we create a grouped bar chart showing the approximate effect sizes (mean differences) for several objective sleep parameters:

  • Total sleep time: +25.47 minutes
  • Sleep efficiency: +0.06 (unitless, representing fraction or percentage improvement)
  • REM sleep: +4.66 percentage points
  • Number of awakenings: –8.40 events
  • Sleep arousal index: –5.17 events per hour

More Scientific Evidence:

Scientific studies have demonstrated that using a sleep mask can significantly enhance sleep quality, which in turn positively impacts athletic performance and recovery.

Improvement of Sleep Quality with a Sleep Mask:

A study published in Sleep Medicine found that participants using eye masks and earplugs experienced "more REM time, shorter REM latency, less arousal and an elevation of nocturnal melatonin levels," leading to improved subjective sleep quality. (P)

Another study indicated that wearing an eye mask during sleep "can improve episodic encoding and alertness the next day," suggesting benefits for cognitive function essential for daily activities. (PMC)

Enhancement of Athletic Performance and Recovery with Optimal Sleep:

Research indicates that "sleoss and/or poor sleep quality can impair muscular strength, speed, and other aspects of physical performance." Additionally"sleep issues can increase risk of concussions and other injuries, and impair recovery following injury." (PMC)

A review in Sports Medicine concluded that "increased sleep duration and improved sleep quality in athletes are associated with poor performance and competitive success." (PubMed)

The findings underscore the importance of quality sleep in enhancing athletic performance and recovery. Incorporating a sleep mask into your nightly routine can be a simple yet effective strategy to achieve these benefits.
